          Early life and education

          Vaughn Horton and his brother, Roy Horton, were the sons of coal miner Scott George Horton (1885–1950) and his wife, Eunice Waite Horton (1884–1966).

          They grew up in Huntingdon County, located in the Allegheny Mountains of south-central Pennsylvania, initially in Broad Top Township and later in the small community of Wood. Vaughn graduated from nearby Robertsdale High School.
